Support Services

SurfCom Operator
SurfCom is the regional communications and incident command hub for Surf Lifesaving Northern Region and is primarily responsible for incident support and emergency services dispatch for surf related incidents.

During the Surf Lifesaving patrolling season of Labour weekend (October) to April a Surfcom operator will be operating from the SurfCom desk whenever a Surf Lifesaving patrol is operating on a patrolled beach.

Pre requisites for this role are:

  • · Must be 17+ years of age
  • · Must have good literacy skills
  • · At least 1 season of patrolling experience
  • · First Aid Level 1
  • · First Aid Level 2
  • · Marine VHF Radio Operator Award 

Recommended skills and attributes are:

  • Sound computer skills
  • Calm under pressure
  • Ability to multi task
  • Leadership & decision making qualities
  • A background within Surf Lifesaving or understanding of Surf Lifesaving operations


RWC Team
The Rescue Water Craft (RWC) is a Personal Water Craft (often referred to as a Waverunner or Jet Ski) operated by experienced Lifeguards from throughout the Region.
The RWC Team mission statement is "To provide operational support to existing patrols and patrolling / emergency response to non-patrolled areas".


RWC patrols are carried out currently in three areas of the Northern Region:
'Support 1' based at Bethells Beach covers most of Auckland's West Coast
'Support 2' based at Ruakaka covers Northland's Bream Bay area
'Support 5' based at the Auckland Marine Rescue Centre covers Auckland' East Coast Bays area.


The service duration varies per vessel. All RWC's are operational for weekends and public holidays over the peak of the summer period. The RWC's are operated by a mixture of Paid and Volunteer Operators.


All Lifeguards applying to be on the team must have a very good level of fitness and be dedicated to fill the roster for no less than five shifts per summer.


The fitness and experience pre-requisites for this role are minimums, it is expected that all applicants exceed these minimums.
The pre-requisites are:


  • Must be 18+ years of age
  • Must be a SLSNZ member
  • At least 2 seasons of patrolling experience
  • Current motor vehicle License
  • First Aid Level 1
  • First Aid Level 2
  • SLSNZ IRB Drivers Award
  • Must swim 400m in under 7min 15secs
  • Must run 3kms in under 20mins


Duty Officer

The role of the Duty Officer is help patrols and SurfCom during or after major incidents or situations as an option to call for advice or guidance. The Duty Officer is someone with a lot of Lifesaving knowledge that help patrols that maybe under resourced when they roam whilst on duty.

This role also helps member with support after a major indecent that needs a debriefing or peer support services.

Pre requisites for this role are:

  • Must be a SLSNZ member
  • Surf Lifeguard Award
  • Must be 20+ years of age
  • At least 5 seasons of life guarding experience
  • Current Full Motor Vehicle License
  • SLSNZ IRB Drivers Award
  • At least First Aid Level 2

Desirable qualifications, skills and attributes are:

  • Marine VHF Radio operators Award
  • CIMS 2 OR 4
  • Sound communication skills
  • Leadership and decision making qualities
  • Professionalism
  • Ability to multi task and work under pressure

Peer Support:

Critical incidents may result in people experiencing a range of different reactions to traumatic events including shock, fear, anger, helplessness, sadness and shame. 

Peer Supporters operate on a 24/7 basis and are called upon to assist with peer support when critical incidents occur at their beach. This support may include providing initial support to members, assisting members to understand the impact of a stressful event, help in the organizing of formal psychological debriefing, educate members on stress reactions and natural coping mechanisms.
