Auckland Council LTP Submissions

Help us secure funding for Surf Life Saving facilities in Northern Region

As you may be aware, Auckland Council has released its long-term plan (LTP) for consultation. The LTP is also known as the 10-year Budget. It sets out what Council plans to achieve in Auckland over the next 10 years, and how it will fund it.

Funding for Surf Life Saving facilities, in particular club rebuilds, is not specifically earmarked for funding within the LTP. Surf Life Saving Northern Region (SLSNR) believes it is imperative that Auckland Council allocates dedicated funding within the LTP that is specifically earmarked for the rebuilds and ongoing maintenance of surf lifesaving club facilities. This funding is essential to ensure the continued operation of our clubs and the safety of all who visit our beaches.

Public consultation for the Long-term Plan 2024-2034 is currently open, and closes on Thursday 28 March. This is when you can give your feedback on our proposals to help us make decisions for Auckland in 2024-2034.

We urge all surf lifesaving clubs in Auckland to submit their feedback on the LTP to advocate for the inclusion of this funding.

Below is a guide for how to submit your proposal. In addition to submitting on behalf of your club, you may wish to make a personal submission and encourage your membership to do the same.

Thank you in advance for completing your submission. Together, we can ensure that our clubs have the resources they need to continue their vital work.

How to submit:

  1. Go to https://akhaveyoursay.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/hub-page/long-term-plan-2024-2034

  1. Click the link that says “Have your say now”.

  1. Answer question 1B:

  1. Answer question 1C, using the following bullet points. You may wish to add additional information that is specific to your club:

  • Surf lifesaving clubs play a vital role in our community, providing essential services to keep our beaches safe. However, many of these facilities are reaching end-of-life and are in need of replacement. Without adequate funding, our clubs will struggle to continue their lifesaving work effectively.
  • Without fit-for-purpose facilities that people enjoy visiting, the Auckland region risks losing the volunteers who provide the service, spelling the end of more than a hundred years of vigilance on our beaches.
  • We therefore request that Auckland Council allocates $8.02 million in funding within the Long Term Plan specifically earmarked for the rebuilds and ongoing maintenance of surf lifesaving club facilities, as per SLSNR’s Surf 10:20 Capital Development proposal.

  1. If you are making a submission on behalf of your club, please do not respond to Question 1a, or Questions 2-6a, as these are not material to surf lifesaving facility operations.

  1. Answer Question 6b, using the following bullet points. You may wish to add additional information that is specific to your club:

  • With regard to Question 1C, Council has a central proposal that recommends spending more where it is needed most. Surf Life Saving facilities are a criticial component of our community. They have served as temporary welfare and community centres, as well as civil defence centres during regional emergencies, including during the Auckland Anniversary flooding and Cyclone Gabrielle.
  • Our facilities aren’t a nice to have, they are the heart of our service. Allocated funding is essential to ensure the continued operation of our clubs and the safety of beachgoers. The amount requested is minimal when compared to the benefit it will have for the region.

  1. Answer Question 7a with regard to funding priorities in your club’s local board area. For example, if your club is located within the Waitākere Ranges Local Board, you may wish to highlight that “Initiatives to support community resilience and safety” should include the adequate funding of surf lifesaving facility rebuilds.

  1. Fill out your contact information. Please ensure that if you are submitting on behalf of your club that you check the box indicating this, and ensure that the details you input relate to the location of your club:

  1. Click “Submit feedback” to complete your submission.

Thanks you again in advance for your support. For further questions, please contact SLSNR GM Zac Franich (zac.franich@lifesaving.org.nz).
